A foster-sponsored medical fund for Corgis and Corgi mixes with multiple health issues established in 2020
August 11, 2024: Rest in Peace, Jora
It breaks our hearts to share the news today that the Southeast Corgi Rescue has lost another one our own. Our beloved Jora, the namesake of Jora’s Fund, has left us following a long, hard battle with DM. What follows is a tribute from her Mom, who loved sweet Jora so very much:
I would like to share the sad news that we had to say goodbye to Jora after a lengthy battle with degenerative myelopathy (DM). Looking back we began to notice symptoms in the Fall of 2022. Jora had a dedicated family, veterinarian, and physical therapist to support her as her disease progressed and robbed her of her ability to walk. Jora passed peacefully surrounded by her people who loved her very much.
Jora’s time with us was short, too short in my opinion, but every moment of it was filled with love. Jora was a character. She was brave, beautiful, independent, feisty, and just a little bit bossy. She was loud – no sneeze ever went unnoticed and she alerted everyone when she heard them. She was fast but not quite fast enough. She always tried her best to keep up with her greyhound brother whenever he got a case of the zoomies in the backyard. She was a fiercely competitive tug of war player. She was a first class love bug, showering everyone she met with kisses. And in true corgi fashion, she was a food connoisseur and champion wall climbing napper. She put a smile on my face every day and I miss her.
Jora didn’t have to get sick. DM didn’t have to happen to her. I want to honor Jora’s memory by reminding everyone that DM is a devastating but preventable disease when responsible breeding practices are used. If you are considering a corgi puppy from a breeder, please search for a conscientious breeder who completes genetic testing to be sure the puppies do not carry the mutated gene that causes degenerative myelopathy.

About Jora’s Fund
Every Corgi that comes to us at SECR has a lasting place in our hearts, and Jora was definitely no exception to the rule.
Jora arrived back in 2018 as a stray shelter pull, overweight and with a bad case of fleas to which she had a pretty rough skin reaction. Jora also had a persistent corneal ulcer that required several visits to a veterinary specialist before it healed. In short, this girl had issues, and required a lot of patience and devotion from her foster to get her on track to live the good Corgi life.
Jora actually held the title of “First-Ever Foster” for her Foster Mom, and lucky for her – and for us – it turned out to be a match made in Corgdom. Mom traveled all the miles necessary to take Jora for repeated visits to her specialist, got her on the diet and exercise regimen she needed to drop down to a healthy and fit weight, and really found herself a best friend and permanent role in the SECR foster family. Jora’s Foster Mom described her as “the most loving dog she has ever met,” and it goes without saying that a love like that sticks with you forever.
Jora’s Foster Mom wanted to make sure that all Corgis in need could have the same chance to get – and give – love that Jora did, and recently made an extraordinary $10,500 donation to SECR to make sure that we can keep making that happen. We are incredibly grateful for and humbled by this foster’s dedication to paying it forward. We are excited about how many of our rescues will get the medical care they need because of her generosity and selflessness.
Today we are proud to announce the creation of “Jora’s Fund,” a special medical fund that will be used to help defray expenses for rescued Corgis and Corgi mixes with multiple health issues.
We always say that we couldn’t do what we do without you, and Jora’s Fund is a perfect example of just that. We are lucky that Jora and her foster Mom came into our lives to remind us about the true meaning of rescue, and that the experience was such a positive one that so many more dogs in need will continue to benefit as a result.
