Meet Rainie!
Rainie (known as Petunia at the shelter) was found as a stray and taken in by Hanover County Animal Protection & Shelter in Virginia. ECCR was full at the time, so we stepped in to help!
The shelter team was wonderful to work with, and let us know that while Rainie is ok with other dogs, she would do best as the only dog for now until she has some training around her resource guarding.
Rainie has been in her foster home since June 28th, and settled in fast. Here is what her foster family had to say:
“She acclimated very quickly to our home and is full of energy but also super cuddly and sweet. The first couple nights she struggled with sleeping in her crate, but since then she has slept through the night, and even fell asleep a couple of times in there while we were out of the house for a couple hours, so no major separation anxiety. We’ve taken her to the vet and gotten her up to date on all her meds and gotten rid of her worms.”
On the medical front, we have some good news to share: Raine tested heartworm negative! Her workup did turn up a few of the common hitchhikers that stray dogs often pick up, including tapeworms, hookworms, and a mild case of coccidia, and she is being treated for all of it. Her tests also came back positive for exposure to Lyme disease. Because she is not showing any symptoms, our vet does not recommend treatment at this time, but we will keep a close eye on her going forward.
Rainie is also going through her a heat cycle. Her foster family is keeping a close eye on her so she does not try to slip out, and giving her some grace on the days she is not that interested in food or wants to rest.
Rainie is not available for adoption. Once her spay is behind her and she has had some training around her resource guarding, we think she is going to make someone a wonderful companion.
