3-year-old mix, in foster
June 29, 2025: Welcome, Queenie!

Most say the “dog days of summer” are about the weather, but for us it usually means it’s raining corgis and corgi mixes in need. Say hello to one of our newest newbies, Queenie!
Queenie is a 3-year-old girl that joins SECR’s quickly growing pack of special needs pups. One of our partner rescues was fortunate enough to recently pull this sweet girl from a poor breeding and hoarding situation where she lived outside with slews of other dogs used solely to mass produce puppies. She recently gave birth to 5 littles (don’t worry – they’ve all gone to other rescues dedicated to finding safe and caring forever homes), received treatment for a benign growth on her head, and now faces an even bigger battle: heartworm treatment.
Yes, you read that right. As if she hasn’t gone through enough, Queenie was recently diagnosed with heartworm and is currently taking twice daily doses of doxycycline to prepare for injections to rid her of the disease. Medicating her hasn’t been an easy feat for her experienced foster family, though, because this sweet girl doesn’t yet trust them. She has no reason to. People have let her down her entire, short life, and while she may be in a safe and loving home now, she doesn’t know it. She cowers, feels safest when she’s hiding alone, and doesn’t really want to eat unless it’s during the middle of the night when her new humans and foster sibling are sleeping and can’t see her do it. Her behavior is common for a mill Mom, whose motto generally is “trust no one.”
Queenie has been with us a couple of weeks, and she does a little bit better every day. Every time she chooses to come out of her room to sit with the family is a time to celebrate, and every time she eats or takes her meds in front of others is one of the biggest small victories we can hope for. Queenie has a long way to go, but we’re all committed to taking this journey with her.
Queenie can use all the love and positive vibes you’ve got to send her way, and if you’re in a position to help, even a small donation toward her upcoming heartworm treatment can go a long way. Visit the Have a Heart fundraising page on our website to pick a donation amount that works for you, and let us know that it’s coming our way for Queenie!
It may not seem like it yet, sweet Queenie, but your life is about to get a whole lot better. We promise you that.
