Fennec

~2 years old ~ Male ~ Corgi mix ~ Adopted

Update July 11, 2020:

Fennec adoption announcement
Sweet boy Fennec came to SECR over a year ago and has been diligently working with our foster families to learn to trust people and pick up on doggy training skills. It’s definitely been an uphill battle for him, but we’re happy to finally be able to announce that all of Fennec’s hard work has paid off! He’s learned to appreciate all the best things about Corgi life and is officially being adopted by his foster family.

Congratulations, Fennec! We love you and wish you and your family the longest, happiest forever together!

Earlier Updates:

Little Fennec has thrived since coming into rescue 6 months ago.  He was surrendered to a shelter with permission to euthanize at 8 months old because he bit his owner. At the shelter he displayed fear aggression and would not let people touch his feet or get near his neck to put on his leash. Through the patient efforts of both the shelter director and then his SECR foster parents, Fennec has learned how to live and be loved in a caring environment. And we feel he is ready for his next big adventure — having a forever home of his own.

Training:
This smart little guy is full of puppy vigor and eager to please. Fennec is house-trained, crate-trained, walks on a leash and travels well while crated. He gets much of his daily food as rewards. While playing and training, he has learned sit, down, stay, release, recall, shake, and twirl. His training has also included meeting friendly strangers, staying on the mat when the outside door is opened, and riding a skateboard.

Medical:
Fennec is neutered and up-to-date on immunizations.  Shortly after coming into SECR, he was diagnosed with Gerd (acid reflux) which caused hiccups, reverse sneezing and some throwing up. He is currently on medication for this and is doing fine.

Personality & Behaviors:
This handsome boy is playful, friendly to those he trusts, and very intelligent. He is medium energy level, but he does have an off switch.   He loves the outdoors.  His idea of a great day is to be outside with someone playing ball, hunting bugs or lizards, frapping around the yard, or just enjoying the sun.  He likes to trail trek, play in puddles, and do some agility work. He is not afraid of objects like the teeter, tunnel, or skateboards, etc.  His favorite toys are small Kong wubbas and balls. He also enjoys puzzles.

He does have resource guarding issues at times, but will usually trade his item if you have one he deems higher value. He also has anxiety in situations that are unfamiliar to him, but continued training should help. He is not on medication for anxiety.

Socialization:
Fennec is fostered in a home with no other pets and no young children.  He has not been cat tested, but has had several visits to doggie day care.  While he doesn’t really play with the other dogs at this point, he seems okay around them and prefers smaller dogs. He enjoys people, male and female, that he knows.  After a few minutes to warm up he is comfortable playing ball and other games, taking treats, and even going on walks with new friends.

Overall:
Because Fennec is still learning to trust people, we feel he will do best in a home with no children.  He is looking to join an active adult family who will continue his training with love and patience so he can continue to thrive. His adoption fee is $275.00
