Our first hurdle, when we bring a dog into rescue, is finding the right foster home to meet the particular needs of that dog. But this is rarely a simple and easy task. Every dog that comes into rescue comes with its own set of unique life experiences and challenges. And while foster homes are temporary homes, they are a crucial first step to getting every dog on the path to living their healthiest and happiest life.
Most rescued dogs have fostering needs well beyond a welcoming bed and a day at the spa in order to make them adoption ready. They need time and attention to feel safe and loved. They need a chauffeur to take them to the veterinarian for routine health care and/or serious health concerns. They need a patient observer to spot things like anxieties, fears, sensitivity to noise, or food allergies. They need a calm trainer to teach them basic commands or help them become more socially comfortable around children, pets, or other dogs. We also frequently get dogs with special needs – ie mobility or health issues or end of life care.
But one of our the biggest challenges is finding a no-pets or no-other-dog foster homes for our dogs who have deep fears or aggression towards other dogs or other animals. It’s not that we don’t get offers to foster them. But people who open their heart and home to care for rescued dogs are generally big hearted dog lovers with dogs of their own.
We currently have two dogs with specific foster needs. If you think you could be a foster match for either of these dogs, please check out our foster page – HERE and our FAQ on fostering – HERE. (And make sure to mention the dogs name in the application.)
