The road from rescue to adoption

The road from rescue to adoption is rarely as smooth or short as we would like.

While our ultimate goal is to find the best forever home for each corgi in our care, our first priority is to ensure we uncover and support each corgi’s best self.  Because we know that a healthy and happy dog has the best chance to thrive in its new home.

So, before a SECR dog becomes available for adoption, we do our best to determine its behavioral and health needs, give it basic training (sit, stay and walk on leash), and ensure it receives all appropriate veterinary care and treatment — including dental care, vaccinations, microchipping, and being spayed or neutered.  All of which takes manpower — and money.

As a volunteer run 501c3 nonprofit, we literally could not do what we do — rescue and adopt out over 40 dogs a year — without our amazing, hard working, and dedicated volunteers and the financial donations of so many generous SECR supporters.

On average, we spend $1,000 per dog for essential vet care alone.  A few years ago, a volunteer made a wonderful infographic that gives a break down of some of the routine veterinary cost we incur (you can see it HERE).  Of course, many of those costs have gone up since then.

While we work to keep our adoption fees as low as possible, generally $150 – $450, those fees rarely cover the expenses each dog incurs.  Which is why we rely on the generosity of our wonderful SECR supporters who donate funds, purchase SECR fundraising items, and buy through Amazon Smile (learn more HERE).

Recently we’ve added two new ways to support Southeast Corgi Rescue :

— Jora’s Fund —

Jora came to us as a stray shelter pull, overweight with several health issues, including a corneal ulcer that required several visits to a veterinary specialist.  Jora’s Foster Mom, who became Jora’s Forever Mom, donated $10,500 to SECR to establish a special medical fund in honor of Jora and the wonderful care she received through us.  Jora’s fund is to help us defray expenses for future SECR Corgi and Corgi mixes with multiple health issues.

A huge SECR thank you goes out to Jora’s Mom for her extraordinary generosity.  If you would like to learn more and/or donate to Jora’s fund, please read more HERE!

— Sponsorship —

We are also incredibly thankful and excited to have our first corporate sponsors — The Chris & Mike Team of EXP Realty, realtors based in the Atlanta area and provide realty service throughout the entire state of Georgia. The Chris & Mike Team  partnered with  Southeast Corgi Rescue in 2021 to help more corgis and corgi mixes in need find their way to foster and forever homes. Beginning in July of 2021, Chris and Mike will generously donate 5% of commissions to SECR from every home they sell!
