Forever Fosters, Foster, Volunteer

Forever Fosters And Saying Goodbye

As any pet owner will tell you, the hardest part of giving your heart to a small furry companion is their unbearably short life span. For Corgis, it is generally 13-15 years. As a rescue, we frequently encounter corgis in need of extraordinary care due to their advanced age and/or acute health issues. It is part of SECR’s mission to try to help when and if we can.

This is where our beloved forever foster volunteers come in. They take on the bittersweet task of caring for our “forever foster” corgis that are near the end of their life and are, for various reasons (i.e. level of daily care required and/or expected medical expenses), considered to be unadoptable. We consider these “forever fosters” corgis and their “forever foster” families to be cherished members of our SECR family.

SECR’s goal with every forever foster is to give them the healthiest, happiest, and most comfortable life possible for as long as we can. We don’t allow our forever fosters to suffer – ever! But we do want them to enjoy every moment they possibly can, knowing they are loved, cherished, and cared for whether those moments add up to days, weeks, months, or years.

Please join us in recognizing the hard work and dedication of SECR’s amazing Forever Foster Volunteers and help us to say goodbye to these dear forever fosters that went to the rainbow bridge in 2023.

As we remember:

SONIA – (aka Skippy) was found as a stray 2 years ago. She had arthritis in her back and front legs along with poor hearing and eyesight. None of this stopped our golden girl from enjoying the good life as a pampered and cherished family member— taking walks, laying in the sun, and cuddling with foster mom.

~~

FRITO – was a 11 yr old shelter pull with a multitude of health issues when he came into rescue. Against all odds this sweet old man thrived as he received regular meals, medical care, and, of course, love. For a year and a half, he lived his best life and made a profound impact on his forever foster parent’s lives.

~~

YODA – was a 12-14 yr old shelter pull in rough shape. He’d been on his own for quite a while and wasn’t sure what to make of baths, a clean soft bed, and human care. Unfortunately, medical testing showed he was in stage 4 kidney failure and he was deteriorating quickly. We couldn’t let him suffer. After only 5 days in rescue he crossed to the rainbow bridge.

~~

CHASE – Soon after he joined SECR in December of 2022 we realized our time with this sweet boy would be short. Among many other health issues, he was battling metastatic cancer. Despite all the health problems and blindness, Chase embraced his new life, happily romping, playing, and eating in the company of his loving foster parents and siblings.

~~

BEAR – (aka Lieutenant Barnabus Bear Willoughby Applebottom) was a distinguished senior alpha male who came into SECR in October 2021and became something of a celebrity “corgi on wheels” on facebook. He made improvement in his mobility through water, laser, and physical therapy and was able to enjoy all his favorites — sunning, siestas, snuggling, and sharing kisses with his foster Mom & Dad.

~~

RUSTY – She was another shelter pull with mobility issues and a too many health issues. For nearly a year, longer than any of us truly expected to have Rusty with us, this girl thrived because she was loved. She savored the little things, mealtime and treats, romps in the yard, long sniffs on her walks, and chewing on her beloved bully bones.

~~

OLIVIA (aka Livvy) – was a 12 year old fluffy goofball with a big personality. She captured her SECR forever foster parent’s hearts nearly three years ago and entertained them with her antics. On Facebook she became known as one of the Golden Girls with Nessa, Opal, and, “Bed Wars” collaborator, Summer (who went to the rainbow bridge in 2022).

~~

ZOE – came into rescue with the odds stacked against her. She was battling a quickly progressing kidney disease and resulting complications. But what mattered to Zoe the most – she knew she was loved and cherished to the end. She relished her time playing, snuggling, and just bonding with her foster parents and siblings.

~~

ECHO – joined the SECR family in June 2022. She had cancer and her body was failing, but she fought until the end and lived longer than her doctors thought she would. Echo was full of sass (and bark) and stole her forever fosters hearts with her sweet smiles and lively “awoooo”s.
